President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Wednesday (01/25) ordered his Cabinet to ensure Indonesia’s preparedness to host three international sports games this year.

“President Jokowi has ordered us to complete the preparation as soon as possible and I was ordered to report again to him at the end of this month,” Minister of Youth and Sports Zainuddin Amali said in a press statement.

According to Zainuddin, the preparation for three international sports competitions, the 2023 FIFA U-20 Football World Cup, the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games, have been properly made.

The Government, the Minister continued, has renovated six stadiums to host the FIFA U-20 World Cup. They are Jakabaring Stadium in Palembang, South Sumatra; Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta: Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, West Java; Manahan Stadium in Solo, Central Java; Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya, East Java; and Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium in Gianyar, Bali.

“Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing has renovated all the stadiums,” Zainuddin said, adding that the Government has also built Gelora Bung Karno Indoor Multifunction Stadium (IMS) as a venue for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup matches.

The Minister also pointed out that the Government’s preparations to host the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games, which will be held in Bali in August this year, are also going smoothly.

“Overall, we are well prepared,” he added.

Chairperson of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) Raja Sapta Oktohari also reported that the ANOC World Beach Games would be the basis for the country to bid to host the Olympics.

“We previously reported to the President that we aspire to host the Summer Olympics,” Okto remarked. (MAY/TGH/UN) (GWH/HD/EP)
