President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo)

As I have mentioned earlier that this dam is the 35th dam inaugurated in the past eight years. I think raw water is vital to irrigate agricultural land for West Nusa Tenggara [province] that often suffers from water shortages. It’s crucial since water is the key. Thus, we expect construction of six dams in West Nusa Tenggara that is projected to be completed next year can drastically increase productivity of rice yields. That is our hope.

Sir, considering vast agricultural land in Sumbawa regency, is it possible to build more dams?

President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo)

As I said earlier, there are six dams which are under construction in West Nusa Tenggara, four of which have been inaugurated; there are two dams to be completed. Six dams are more than enough. We just need to ensure the water is well distributed through irrigation. We hope, once again, it can increase the productivity of rice yield in the province, particularly in Sumbawa.

Reporter

For Sumba Island, is it possible to build one more dam, Sir?

President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo)

Tiu Suntuk Dam will be completed next year. Insyaallah, God willing, it will be completed in 2023.

Reporter

I mean except for dams that have been constructing, are they other dams to be built, Sir?

President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo)

Not yet. Other provinces also want to have more dams.

Reporter

Last question, Sir; regarding extreme weather that is forecasted to occur, what is your advice to the public?

President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo)

Everyone should be vigilant, be careful, and pay attention to information from the BMKG [Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency]. That’s all.
